How to Download US-Only Free App Store Apps From Outside of the US

Guest Author, Aug 21, 2011

If you live outside of the United States, chances are you occasionally run across an app in the App Store that you want, but can’t download due to its unavailability in your country. For the most part, apps are always available in the US, but some international channels tend to be lacking.

If you’d like to be able to download free — not paid — US-only apps from the App Store from another country, we’ll show you how…

First, you’ll need a US App Store account. It’s actually easier to acquire one of these accounts than you would think. Lets get started.

One thing you’ll need beforehand is an alternate e-mail address that you have full access to, and it also has to be different than the e-mail address you used in your original App Store account. If you don’t have a second email address, you can easily create a new one with a free service like Gmail.

Once you’ve got an alternate e-mail, go to the App Store on your iPhone. You want to be in the “Featured” section, then scroll to the bottom and select “Sign Out” under your Apple ID. Now that you’ve signed out, find a free app in the App Store to download. Try downloading it and select “Create Apple ID.” Follow the step-by-step instructions, register with your second email, and make sure you confirm your country as the United States. (Even if it’s really not.)

When you get to the credit card selection screen, just select “None” and continue. The final step is to activate your account by clicking the link that’s sent to your new e-mail. Once you’ve done that, you will have full access to purchase free apps in the US App Store.

If you want to use this account as your primary account and don’t have an American credit card for paid app purchases, you can find plenty of iTunes gift cards on eBay!

If you have any further questions or problems, let us know in the comments.

Disable Passcode Lock When On Wi-Fi For iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad

If you ever wished that your iDevice was smart enough to disable passcode once you get home, or say are amongst trusted friends, your iDevice might just be able to pull that off thanks to a clever Cydia tweak called, CleverPin. Now before we go all praise on this tweak, you should know that this tweak costs you a minor $1.99. However, that being said, with the purpose and functionality in mind, and the fact that we found no alternative for this tweak, some people might gladly pay for this tweak. Why? The tweak allows you to define the Networks, connecting to which, the tweak disables the passcode. While that alone is impressive, the tweak has a few other tricks up its sleeve as well.

The tweak, aside from triggering when connected to a specified network, also kicks in if you’re playing songs on your device, charging the device, or are in airplane mode. Of course all this has to specified and these options can be found in the Settings app under the tweaks name.

Now if your phone is connected to the specified network, after a set time of inactivity, the tweak will kick in the passcode automatically. Pretty useful.

You can install this tweak via Cydia from the BigBoss repository, or you can search for it under the Search tab in Cydia.

Movie posters recreated as though they were made in the 1950s

Since their release they have become Hollywood’s biggest and most iconic blockbusters, instantly recognisable to film fans the world over.

But now a series of posters from the world’s biggest movies of modern cinema have been re-imagined – as classic movies from the 1950s and 60s.

Artists have recreated dozens of iconic recent Hollywood films as if they were released two or three decades earlier, giving each film poster the vintage look of a different cinematic era.

The wonderful interpretations also cast film stars of decades ago in the title roles of modern-day classics.

In a 50s recreation of Avatar, for example, Sam Worthington is replaced in the lead role for the 2009 epic by William Shatner.

A vintage re-imagining of Pulp Fiction, meanwhile, casts Charlton Heston in a main role, while more bizarrely a 1960s version of Die Hard sees Bruce Willis’s character John McClane replaced by Leonard Nimoy.

Other modern day classics to get the poster makeover treatment include Trainspotting, Superman, The Big Lebowski, Inception and The Hangover.

While Trainspotting famously cast Ewan McGregor as heroin addict Mark Renton, in its new incarnation the lead role is played by Anthony Hopkins and the film directed by Jean Luc Godard.

The pictures were created by Peter Stults, an artist who saw another designer produce similar artwork and decided to take the idea forward.

American artist Peter said he started creating the vintage posters last year after being inspired by fellow artist Sean Hartter.

Peter, 29, from New York, told MailOnline: ‘I started doing general fictional movie posters while studying film at University of California, Santa Cruz back in the early 2000s.

‘Between my two favourites, Avatar and Fifth Element, there are probably nearly 60 pieces of sci-fi pulp book covers and b-movie posters mixed in. They involved a lot of digging and exploring on the internet.

‘Then with the actors (in the posters) it’s a mix of looking at film history, getting a sense of who were the leads at that time, or looking at genre pieces and seeing who played what kind of role.

‘Then some just sort of automatically click for me (the Trainspotting cast came to me in seconds).’

Can I “un-jailbreak”? (iPhone Different Restore Functions)

There’s two different types of restores:

One is a “restore from backup”, which you can do by right clicking on the icon of your iPhone in the left bar. This won’t remove the jailbreak and it’s just of your data (contacts, SMS, pictures, apps, settings, etc.) You can restore an unjailbroken backup onto a jailbroken iPhone and the reverse.

The other type of Restore is that big restore button that you see in iTunes, near the Update button. This wipes your iPhone completely clean, updates it to the latest available version (which is most probably not jailbreakable), updates baseband (and most probably removes software unlock if you had one), removes the jailbreak. It doesn’t restore your data (which you can do later). This is always an option no matter how messed up your iPhone gets.

This is a much better resource, and it’s cross platform

Another nice list

Maybe not open source, but [1] Ninite has a list of software that is free and really good.

I think this is the one. It seems to be exactly what I want.

No problem, I have a desktop pc in my basement and a laptop that we use all the time. My wife loads all her pictures on the laptop and I have syncback on the desktop. Twice a week syncback looks at the pictures folder on the laptop and copies anything new down to the desktop. I then have carbonite installed on the desktop to send the data offsite. If my house burns down I want to make sure I still have all those pictures of my kids in tact! Everything else can be replaced.

Even the kids??

allwaysync http://allwaysync.com/ is free for personal use. You only have to install it on the windows side.

Once set up you can run it manually, schedule it, run when the machine is idle, or have it watch the folders and automatically propagate any changes. It can work using windows folder sharing, or connect via FTP for the transfer, and can use UNC paths so you don’t have to map a drive letter if you don’t want to.

There are a ton of options, so you can tweak it to work many different ways (exclude files, folders, extensions, wildcards, only propagate changes in one direction, etc) and it will ask you what to do in the case of conflicts (files on both sides are changed).

I use it at home to mirror my PC to my NAS (which I use for backup). For work, I bought the license so I can use it to mirror some local network shares to an offsite backup machine.

usenet tutorial free rfd

For those new to Usenet and Newsgroups here’s a good beginner’s site telling you all about it. Read the Beginners info and follow the guides to get a good understanding of it.

Binaries4all

After that go grab SABNZBd as it supports almost all OS’s, is free and for my money by far the best Newsgroup reader. It also has tons of support out there as well as plenty of addons like SABConnect++ for Chrome, NzbStatus for Firefox and Sickbeard which is a backend PVR style addon that will automatically download your favorite shows.

Once you’re done that head over to Brandon’s excellent thread comparing Usenet plans. It can be found here: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/usene…ently-1016725/

The Renamer is your best friend here. You have to tinker with it a bit, either follow the instructions on the website or parts of this guide that was posted in this subreddit a little while back. Once you get the renamer set up, you can just drag-and-drop your movies and it’ll sort it quite nicely.
