To quote myself from a previous post:

Touristy stuff

  • Go to Parliament, the Library, and the Peace Tower. It’s free.
  • Go to museums. I recommend Civilization, War, or the National Gallery.
  • Walk along the Rideau Canal.
  • Walk along “Confederation Boulevard”, i.e. from Parliament, down to *Major’s Hill Park, down Sussex to see Rideau Hall / 24 Sussex.
  • Best vistas of the city for pictures: the Astrolabe (the hill behind the National Gallery with a statue of Champlain)
  • Explore the market. Don’t forget the courtyards (York with the patios; Jeanne-d’Arc with the dancing bear; Tin House Court with the fountain and the great patio (Black Thorn Cafe))
  • Check out the Glebe (Bank St. between the highway and the Rideau canal), Elgin, Westboro.
  • Go to the Diefenbunker, a real Cold War bunker

Food & Drink

  • Have a beavertail in the Market.
  • Ottawa has lots of pubs. Check out The Manx (Elgin) for an authentic pub experience.
  • Ottawa can’t compete with Montreal or Toronto for food in general, but there are a number of great restaurants (especially if you have a generous per diem!). I suggest Sweetgrass (Market), Murray Street (Market) or Benitz (Centretown). Tons of vietnamese pho (Pho Bo Ga La is the best) and Indian (Light of India on Bank or East India Company in Centretown for a good buffet).
  • Ottawa has the best shawarma in the country, no contest. Go to Shawarma Palace on Rideau. Eat like a king.
  • If you want a good burger, go to The Works on Bank, just past the highway.
  • If you want good dessert, try Oh So Good in the market, or Piccolo Grande for gelatto.
  • For drinks, there are countless bars in the market, on Elgin, in the Glebe, etc.

Entertainment

  • Go catch a play or a concert at the National Arts Centre. It’s much cheaper than you’d think, and it’s world class.
  • Go see a IMAX movie while you’re at the museum of civilization.

Outdoors

  • Check out Gatineau Park, a national park minutes from the core. Go all the way up to the Champlain Belvedere
  • Explore the green spaces Ottawa has to offer: Ottawa river, Rideau river, Rideau Canal, Arboretum, Dows Lake, Strathcona Park,

For a city its size, there are tons of things to do in Ottawa. Enjoy!

For Food & Drink I would add a few more places:

  • La Bottega (Market, George St.)- Italian store in the market that makes a mean sandwich!
  • Domus Cafe (Market, Murray St.) – Fantastic small restaurant that serves seasonal, local food. If they have it, definitely try their stacked heirloom tomato salad!
  • Little Italy (Preston St.) is a great place, has tons of great restaurants, two comedy clubs (absolute comedy and yuk yuk’s), and one of my favourite pubs (Pub Italia) that has over 200 varieties of beer!

I’d like to add to Entertainment:

Depending your interests, a lot of bars in Ottawa have live shows pretty much all the time. Babylon, Zaphod’s, Maverick’s, Cafe Dekcuf are just a few.

The Mayfair always has a few good movies playing a month. There’s a bar down the street and a great chip truck across the street.

All in all, a pretty great write up.

Great write-up. I didn’t read it all, but did want to add that I would recommend the OMNIMAX – not just an IMAX – since OMNIMAXes are far more rare.

If you’re a film buff, check out the schedule for the Mayfair. Lots of odd screenings, many on 16mm.
